Puppy Stacks

Over the past couple of weeks we have been testing each puppy extensively using a variety of methods.  It is always exciting to match a puppy with a family knowing it is a really good fit.  Our first puppy has left the nest.

We still have a puppy available but all but the others have been matched with their forever homes.

Puppy tests

Today was another part of our puppy testing.  This helps us to make the best match for each new puppy owner, according to the new owners preference.
Each puppy has its own  unique character.

A day in the life of a pup

The Pups are interested in everything around them. We are trying to expose them to various loud sounds and different places, so they become more comfortable with children, noises, other animals, different places.

We have begun separating off pups from the rest of the litter and having them with us. We continue to monitor each personality.

The pups are eating large amounts of food three times a day.  Their diet is soaked puppy biscuits, raw milk, eggs, fresh deer liver and heart, and bones.

We have a particular chicken that is way too friendly and may end up as pup fodder if she continues to be so unwise.  Each time we feed the pups she races over and joins them at the food bowl.  The pups eat with her along side and then pull on her feathers, sniff her, and try to work out what she is!  So far they have been very gentle and she continues to peck away while letting them pull on her wing or tail.

Natural hunting instinct

We continually monitor the pup's developing personalities so we can match each pup with each family.  Vizsla have a natural hunting instinct which is important for those who wish to use their Vizsla to indicate game.  Some pups have more hunt drive than others although all Vizsla are natural indicators and whether pet or hunter, will sneak up on various birds or rabbits with their slow, fluid, stalking movements.

Our first dog, Taz, used to spend his day romping along hedge rows and in our extensive native gardens, or near the pond,  pointing at birds and sneaking up on them until they finally flew off.  Petra (Grandmother to these pups) has been trained to indicate or track deer but also seems intent on stalking rabbits (even our pet ones she can't get to) over and over again.

We will also test the puppies for other traits with an extensive test we use when they are 8 weeks old.  By keeping track of each puppy and their responses to various situations, we can be more confident in accurately assessing our pups personality.

They are now good at keeping their sleeping area clean and will toilet away from their bed area. They delight to romp over to us when called and have good appetites.
